Summer Skin Survival: 5 Expert Tips for Sensitive Skin

Summer Skin Survival: 5 Expert Tips for Sensitive Skin

While the sunshine can indeed boost our mood, it also brings a range of challenges for our skin. Increased heat, humidity, sunscreen, and sweat can lead to clogged pores, dehydration, breakouts, and accelerated sun damage.

But with a few simple changes, like boosting hydration, staying consistent with SPF, and incorporating gentle exfoliation into your skincare routine, you can help your skin stay clear, balanced, and radiant all summer long.

Why Does Summer Skincare Need a Little Extra Attention?

As the temperature and UV levels rise during the summer, so do the demands on our skin. This is because increased heat, UV rays and humidity means more sweat, more oil, and more frequent use of sunscreen, all of which can lead to clogged pores, breakouts, and an uneven complexion. Stronger UV exposure can accelerate sun damage, triggering pigmentation and early signs of ageing.

That’s why we recommend giving your summer skincare routine a little extra attention, so that you can keep your skin clear, balanced, and protected.

And this is how…

How to Take Care of Your Skin This Summer: Our 5 Tips

1. SPF Is a Non-negotiable

Arguably the most important tip of all is to always remember to wear your sunscreen (SPF). No exceptions.

Daily SPF protection is the foundation of any effective summer skincare routine because during the summer months, UV rays are stronger and more direct, meaning your skin is at greater risk of sunburn, pigmentation, premature ageing, and even long-term damage.

On sunny and cloudy days, your skin is exposed to UV rays. You may have already heard about UVA and UVB type rays - both can cause lasting skin damage.  So we recommend applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 every morning, choosing SPF 50+ for extended outdoor exposure, and reapplying at least every few hours - especially after swimming, sweating, or toweling off.

It’s also crucial to wear SPF if you’re using active skincare ingredients (such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, ceramides, retinol, AHAs and BHAs ), as these can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.

2. Exfoliation Is Key

With the increased use of SPF and a natural rise in sweat and oil production, your pores are more likely to become congested, leading to dullness, breakouts, and uneven texture.

Regular exfoliation gently removes dead skin cells, residual sunscreen, and other surface impurities. This unclogs pores, improves skin texture and radiance, and enables serums and moisturisers to penetrate more effectively. Over time, exfoliation can accelerate cell turnover, support collagen synthesis, and enhance the skin’s natural repair and renewal mechanisms. It’s essential to opt for an exfoliant that’s both effective and gentle.

Why Peruda’s Exfoliating Mask Is a Must‑Have

Specifically formulated to be gentle yet effective, our Botanical Exfoliation Mask works to deeply cleanse the skin without disrupting your natural barrier, which is a crucial factor during the warmer months, when skin is often more sensitive due to heat and sun exposure.

At the heart of its formula is a powerful blend of natural, skin-loving ingredients. For example, wild-grown Pracaxi Oil helps to support skin regeneration and improve skin texture, while organic certified Safflower Seed andBabassu Oils nourish, soothe, and balance the skin.

Myrtle Oil, Khadira Bark, Neem and Manjishta Root Extracts provide antioxidant and calming properties. Their rich phytochemical profiles (including flavanoids, tannins, and phenolics) are ideal for improving skin tone, calming irritation, reducing redness and oxidative stress. This unique blend of nourishing botanicals support overall skin recovery from sun exposure.

3. Stay Hydrated Inside and Out

Did you know that, in the heat, your skin loses moisture more quickly? You may have heard of transepidermal water loss, or TWL. This means water evaporates from skin faster in hot conditions accelerating moisture loss which compromises the skin barrier and makes the skin feel sensitive even when it appears oily or sweaty. This is why hydration is one of the most important, and often overlooked, elements of healthy summer skin.

Internally, you should aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day to support your skin’s natural barrier and overall health.

Externally, opt for lightweight, hydrating skincare products that help replenish lost  moisture without clogging your pores, and feeling heavy or greasy in the heat. Even if your skin feels oily in the summer, don’t skip the moisturiser, as dehydration can actually trigger more oil production, leading to congestion and breakouts.

4. Cleanse Your Skin in the Morning and Night

Cleansing your skin twice daily, once in the morning and once at night, is an essential step in any effective skincare routine, particularly in the summer when sweat, sunscreen, and pollution can quickly accumulate.

Choose a cleanser suited to your skin type, avoiding harsh surfactants or alkaline soaps that may strip or irritate the skin’s natural barrier.

Our Botanical Resilience Ritual Face Wash is a great choice as it’s formulated with certified organic ingredients and designed to cleanse effectively without disturbing your skin’s natural balance.

5. Remember After-Sun Care

Sun exposure can dehydrate the skin and trigger inflammation, sensitivity, or redness.

This is why skincare focused on rehydrating, calming, and aiding the skin’s natural repair is a crucial step after sun exposure.

You won’t always find the exact words “after-sun” on the packaging. What is important is that the product should deliver intense hydration, anti-inflammatory support, and antioxidant protection whilst being lightweight and cooling.

Look for formulas that include antioxidant-rich anti-inflammatory botanicals that soothe skin, restore moisture, and support natural recovery - like lightweight gels, calming serums, or nourishing masks containing for example Copaiba Oil Resin, or Sacha Inchi Seed, Pataua, Açaí, or Buriti Oils, with aloe vera or organic glycerine as a base.
